Everyone Loves a Photo Booth – Especially Kids!

Weddings really are an inter-generational celebration – from the great grandparents down to the flower girls and the ring bearer. It is a gathering of the people in your life (of all ages) who love you. Fortunately there are many inter-generational attractions at a wedding: amazing food, crazy dancing, and of course – the photo booth. Everyone loves the photo booth, but one group of humanity ESPECIALLY loves it: kids. They just can’t wait to draw the curtain in their cozy little space, press the big, green button, make silly faces for the camera, and then, THE BEST PART – wait for the booth to magically deliver their photo-strips. At Photobooth Planet, we encourage maximum use of the photo booth rental. We want the guests to use it over and over again and most of our littlest guests do go home with quite a stack of photos. But we also know how to politely make sure everyone gets a turn and that no one (of any age) takes over the booth. Here are some of my favorite photos of children having fun with the photobooth at a few recent weddings in Connecticut and Rhode Island.

Going the Extra .5 Mile

The past month has proven to be a real lesson in running a small business. I have been at the helm of Photobooth Planet | Portland for over 2 years now, but I am still learning. Unashamedly learning.
I was contacted by the Oregon League of Conservation Voters about providing a booth for their annual ‘EcoProm’. This was one of the many events I got through our recent Groupon offering. The jobs have a slim profit margin, but in this economy, how can you be anything but grateful for the business? Well, the OLCV wanted an overlay made from their logo. This is right in my wheelhouse, so not a problem. Then, they asked if the curtain color could be changed to green. Now, green is a problem for a couple of reasons: Some digital cameras don’t like a true green very well, and tend to shift the color towards blue. Also, green can reflect onto faces and make guests look a bit seasick.
I mentioned my reservations, and the fact that we don’t have a green curtain to the event coordinator, but when she asked about using the booth without any curtain at all, I knew it was time to get creative. By purchasing a few yards of apple green fabric, we put up a panel that was pinned to the original, red curtain. The OLCV folks were overjoyed, and the pictures turned out nice too.
That’s when it occurred to me. Sometimes success is not even about going the “extra mile”, sometimes it’s even easier than we make it out to be. You can be a hero by just going an extra half-mile. It’s not that hard. And seeing a virtual who’s who of political big-wigs for the state of Oregon enjoying our booth for the evening, well, that is what you call a bonus!

Here is an amazing wedding film by Mike Cyr at Buzz Media from a wedding we did at one of our favorite venues: Saltwater Farm Vineyard in Stonington CT. The vendor team was an all-star cast with Sarah True as planner, Yumiko Fletcher from Hana Floral Design providing flowers, catering by Gourmet Galley, DJ Doug from Power Posse providing entertainment, and Anna Sawin Photography, and of course, photo booth rental by Photobooth Planet.

Customization Options Galore

Most photobooth rental companies have the capacity to customize your photo strips to include your name and date or a graphic. Indeed we offer photo-strip customization as a complimentary service with all our packages. What sets Photobooth Planet apart though is our ability to offer a variety of curtain color (currently hydrangea blue, silver, black, burgundy, pink, and damask). In the image above you can see Barbara Foley of Perception Jewelry showing off our new Damask print curtain at the SNE Bridal Show in Providence RI. Not only can we offer a variety of curtain colors, but we also have the ability to customize the poster on the side of the booth to reflect your theme or to have a picture of the bride and groom or guest of honor displayed there.
Unparalleled Image Quality

If we’ve said it once we’ve said it a million times – not all photo booths are created equal. Not only does that apply to the aesthetic appeal of the booth itself, but to the quality of the images the booth produces. Photobooth Planet photobooths produce images of unparalleled clarity. This is a function of superior digital photo technology and flattering lighting inside the booth. It is the first thing guests comment on when the first see their photo-strips: they can’t believe how clear the images are AND how good they look in them. This is important. You want your guests to be impressed and delighted with the quality of their pics. They will hang them on the fridge or put them on their desk at work. But just as important is the impact high quality images have on the photo guest book we create for you. It’s a keepsake you will have forever and your friends will want to look at when they come over. You should have the best images possible in what will surely be a treasured album of once-in-a-lifetime memories.
A Word About Props…

Regarding props. They can certainly add some fun to the photo booth rental experience, but if you go with them at all, my advice is to go light. Going overboard with the props will result in a couple hundred strips of nearly anonymous people dressed up in the same costume. A few mustaches-on-a-stick (see above photo taken during a photo booth rental at a wedding in Connecticut), chalk and a chalkboard, and some funny sunglasses will do the trick. My bias is to get people in the photobooth as they came to your event. The magic of the photobooth happens when the curtain closes. In the safety of their little private photo studio, your guests will feel free to let another side their personalities come out. They will ham it up with or with out props. You want as much of the real them as possible for your photo scrapbook.
Clear Plastic Photo-strip Frames – a nice touch.

Providing something for your guests to preserve and display their photo-strips with is a nice gesture. The clear acrylic frames pictured above (from a wedding featuring our photo booth rental at Castle Hill in Newport, Rhode Island) were sourced on ebay. We’ve had many brides who use them – or some other kind of wooden frame – to display table assignments. It is a nice touch and ensures that each guests receives one. After jumping in the photo booth most guests will put their favorite photo-strip in the frame right away and display it at their table for everyone to see.
Our Goal: send your guests home with a fat stack of photo-strips

It is rare these days that anyone has a current, hard-copy photo of themselves. Everything is digital – jpgs on facebook. Guests are thrilled to have a picture that they can hold in their hand of themselves, dressed to the nines, having fun with family and friends. It is our goal to send your guests home with as many photo-strips as they can carry (the photo above was taken at a back yard wedding we did in Greenwich, Connecticut). With our photo booth rentals everyone has unlimited access to duplicate photo-strips. Instant gratification and something they can hang on the fridge.
Eleven Photobooth Rental Tips to Consider
Posted 8/09/11 in: Connecticut Featured Martha’s Vineyard Massachusetts New Hampshire / Northern MA / Southern ME New Jersey New York Rhode Island Sidebar Vermont / Upstate NY

- Have the photobooth available starting with the cocktail hour. Guests are often looking for something to do, and the curiosity factor is high. You get more bang for your buck starting early than going late when most guests are focused on dancing and/or saying good byes.
- If possible keep the photobooth as close to the action as possible. You want the guestbook to be full and your guests to go home with a stack of photo-strips. The closer the booth is to the bar or to the dance floor the more use it will get.
